The Lions just about did it all.

The West Linn girls golf team broke through to win the District 2 At-Large Regional Tournament at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn on Monday, May 12, and notched four top-seven finishes along the way.

As a team, West Linn earned a berth in the Class 6A state tournament – the Lions have qualified for state every year since 2008 — by shooting 365 and beating runner-up Tualatin by 47 strokes.

“It was an amazing feeling to place first as a team at regionals, and we’re all really excited and motivated to compete at state,” said West Linn freshman Brianna Chen, who finished second overall with a 14-over-par 86. “OGA is a challenging course, and while I think I could’ve played better, especially on some of the par 5s, I still feel good about how I performed overall.”

The complete team scoring included: West Linn 365, Tualatin 412, Central Catholic 412, Lakeridge 418, Nelson 452, Barlow 477, Tigard inc., St. Mary’s Academy inc., David Douglas inc., Sandy inc.

Also qualifying for state was Tualatin, Central Catholic freshman Berkley Beam (she was third at 90) and David Douglas junior Olivia Satterthwaite (sixth at 93). Lakeridge freshman Hannah Wendorf – she won Monday’s regional with a 6-over-par 78 – and St. Mary’s junior Chloe Swientek had previously qualified for state at the Three Rivers League district tournament.

“I didn’t play my best, but still managed to get a win,” Wendorf said. “I will need to work on my swing and putting for state, but mentally, I feel ready. I hope I can get top 10.”

Next up, the Lions, Lake Oswego (the Lakers won a berth to state at district) and Wendorf will play in the Class 6A state tournament, set for 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, May 19-20, at the Emerald Valley Golf and Resort in Creswell.
