The Lakers backed it up.

The Lake Oswego boys golf team, after dominating the Three Rivers League regular season, backed up that success at district, winning the TRL district tournament at Stone Creek Golf Club on Monday, April 6.

“It was super important to win as a team,” said Lake Oswego junior Drew Woolworth, the TRL medalist. “Last week, we didn’t play very well as a team and we were worried about this week, so we prepared well to be able to show out today. Today also showed us that we can bounce back after having a down week.”

The Lakers won the tournament with a 9-over-par team total of 297, while second-place Tigard finished four shots back at 301. The complete team scoring included: Lake Oswego 297, Tigard 301, West Linn 308, Lakeridge 318, Tualatin 337, Oregon City 340.

With their win, the Lakers secured an automatic team berth to the Class 6A state tournament, set for Monday and Tuesday, May 19-20, at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn. The teams from West Linn and Lakeridge, meanwhile, qualified for the Special District 2 regional golf tournament at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn.

Woolworth took top honors at district – securing his third straight TRL title — with a stellar 4-under-par 68 at Stone Creek, an effort that lifted him past Tigard senior Jennings Oelke and West Linn junior Cade McVicker and their 1-under-par 71s. Woolworth’s round included eight birdies and a blistering 5-under -par 31 on the front nine.

“Today, my key to victory was just to try and stay positive,” Woolworth said. “I struggled last week and got frustrated so I made it my goal today to try and stay positive. … Winning the TRL again was extremely competitive against Jennings. … (I’m) happy that I got the job done for the third year in a row and I’m excited to chase it again next year, too.”

In addition to Woolworth’s efforts, Lake Oswego sophomore Nathan Pai took fourth at 72, junior Nate Cheriel was eighth at 78, junior Jimmy Keyser took 12th at 79 and senior Colin Konkol placed 19th at 83.

For third-place West Linn, McVicker stepped up to tie for second with a 1-under-par 71, a round highlighted by his five birdies.

“I played a played a solid round of golf with some ups and downs,” McVicker said. “What led to my success was keeping the ball in play all day and hitting many greens.”

After McVicker, juniors Cade Lee and Cole Dickson tied for eighth at 78, junior Grady Kane took 16th at 81 and junior Coby MacGlashan finishedd 24th at 85.

“I do think my team … will make it to state,” McVicker said. “We have five great guys and we have a whole week to prepare for regionals. I think we are going to do great.”
