The Lions hit it in the sprints.
They stepped up in the jumps, too.
In the end, the West Linn boys track and field team used those efforts to beat Lake Oswego 88-56 at Lake Oswego High School on Wednesday, April 29.
“We’ve just been building all season and the progression has been … amazing,” said West Linn junior Quentin Flintjer, who won the 1,500 meters in a new personal-best time. “Hopefully, we can continue that.”
With the win, the Lions’ third straight, West Linn remained unbeaten in the Three Rivers League at 3-0. Lake Oswego, meanwhile, lost for the third straight time in league and fell to 0-3 in Three Rivers League action.
“The team as a whole has been pretty solid,” said Lake Oswego senior Baron Kurland, who won the 400 and also ran on LO’s winning 4×100 relay. “It’s definitely different after losing a lot of our sprinters from last year, but I have no doubt that we can win state again in our relays, and hopefully, my 400.”
The Lions built their win on top-three sweeps in the 100, 200, high jump and triple jump, and additional “Ws” in the 800, 1,500, high hurdles, intermediate hurdles, 4×400 relay, shot put and discus.
Flintjer did his part in the 1,500 with a new PR of 4 minutes, 18.05 seconds, kicking past LO junior runner-up Chris Hayashi (he set a PR of 4:18.81) down the stretch.
“I was just thinking of sticking with him and if you have enough to pass by him at the end, then do it,” Flintjer said. “I just wanted to get under 4:20 and I knew that I had a good shot to win because I was seeded first. I thought I might as well try and do both.”
West Linn’s other winners included: sophomore Kenneth Ritchie in the 100 with a PR of 11.28; senior Peter Daniels in the 200 with a PR of 22.17; junior Lucas Sobotta in the 800 at 2:06.91; freshman Ambrose Lovett in the 110 high hurdles with a PR of 17.96; junior Aidan Sauer in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a PR of 39.85; the 4×400 relay team of sophomore Paul Johnstone, sophomore Logan Wilson, freshman Luke Cutting and junior M.J. Kennybrew at 3:50.07; senior Tristan Bresser in the shot put and discus, winning the shot with a PR of 49 feet, 10 inches and the discus at 125-0; sophomore Isaac Compaore in the high jump at 6-0; and freshman Brennan Cheng in the triple jump at 34-0.
The Lakers, meanwhile, held their own in the jumps, split the day’s two relays and made their marks on the track and in the throws, with Kurland breaking through to win the 400 with a PR of 48.77 – the best time this year in the Three Rivers League and fourth-best time in the state.
“I feel like my individual performance started off slow this outdoor season, but is definitely picking up now and it’s only going to get better from here,” Kurland said. “It’s going to be very competitive at state for sure, but I’m ready and very excited because of the fast competition we will be running against.”
Lake Oswego’s other winners included: senior Colin Manning in the 3,000 with a PR of 8:52.50; the 4×100 relay team of junior Jalen Bauman, Kurland, junior Grant Smith and freshman James Prasad at 42.77; junior Liam Tobin in the javelin at 143-8; senior Noah Ha in the pole vault at 11-6; and Smith in the long jump at 19-9.5.
